I'm not alone, but sometimes I wish I was
Monday, 26 October 2009
A recent study in the US has found that among 8 year old children, 1 in every 100 has autism.
For boys, the figure is 1 in 58. If there isn't a child with autism in your son or daughter's class, he or she is in the class next door. Or maybe it is your son or daughter. Like it is my son.
And the numbers are rising.
Read it here: CDC find higher incidence of autism.
As a mother of a boy with autism, that's frightening.
We're lucky - my son is on the mild end of the spectrum. But if you think it doesn't impact every single moment of our lives together, think again.
I know I'm not alone in battling this thing, but sometimes I wish I was. Because the thought that so many people are out there battling, and struggling too, is beyond horrific.
My thoughts and wishes go out to all families - and especially the kids - who are struggling with autism.
May we find a way through this thing, together.

isn't that scary? I've been reading some pretty interesting/scary stuff about environmental influences of fetus vulnerability to Autism. Also, lots of research being done at Dalhousie (local) University with sibling studies....
as a Speech Language Pathologist I think my favourite AND the most heart wrenchingly difficult families are my clients and families that struggle with Autism. I adore my clients, from the mild to the biting, throwing, tantrum-ing severe. They all teach me so so much about strength, about love, acceptance, joy and light.
Many Blessings to you and yours.
Not being alone also means having support to help you through.
My thoughts and wishes go to YOU. It must be hard to adjust your life to autism, but those children are so lovable...
Take care, dear.
I have one too! Mine is also mild but irritating, annoying, dyslexic, gifted and just turned into a teenager (13). He is also funny, intelligent, off the wall and lots of other good stuff.
