The trouble with gardening...

Tuesday, 1 September 2009

The trouble with gardening is that it's addictive. Once you start, you can't stop.

In my case, I've got my tomato seeds planted. They're ready to go. They're tiny toms, so if it gets cold, I can bring them inside. All good. They haven't even tipped their noses up above the soil yet, or I'd have a photo to show you!

However, there lies the rub, as Shakepeare might say. Because what happens next but I come across this deliciously simple recipe for Tomato Basil Bruschetta at Green For Nothing.

And now I just know I need to grow some basil!

I'm planning on planting my tomato seeds tomorrow. My lovely package from Eden Seeds arrived in the mail yesterday.

I also got some basil...

Can't wait to try out that recipe! Especially on homemade bread that my 10 year old son is getting really good at making.

Only when it works - I have emerged from my babymoon to find something has eaten my perennial basil and potatoes and onions :( And my butternut that looked so promising had already succumbed to something before producing any fruit. Rather depressing.
I need plants that require no tending, and never get eaten by anything except humans... could be difficult!
I'm glad your potted garden is going well though. Get the basil - it's also delicious on pizza with sliced eggplant :)

Hi Sparkly Tiara - I went and snooped at a whole stack of seed sites after I saw those seeds you were ordering...seed porn :-)

It makes me realise how much I've changed - ten years ago, I would have been surfing the Victoria's Secret website instead!

Bruschetta on home made bread with home-grown tomatoes and basil...yummmmmm!

Hi Pezzae - What a complete bummer :-( But I'm amazed that you're even up and running this soon after having a baby, let alone thinking about gardens!

Yes, I will get some basil. The problem is I'll have to grow it indoors, and find somewhere that the kids can't get to it, as it is just too cold outside for it to do well. I'm lusting after greenhouses.

Hi Julia - Welcome :-) With planting, I think it's just a matter of taking that first step. Find a lovely day, when the sun is shining and it isn't too cold, and just get out and do it.

I'm also lucky that I have two very keen preschooler-ey helpers, who are enthusiastic about everything, and they push me along!

I find visiting beautiful garden centres, where everything is artistically presented, always gets me inspired!

Hi Touchatou - I know what you mean!

I still find it weird especially at Christmas, seeing all the photos of everyone in the northern hemisphere freezing, while we have the air-conditioner running and are eating salads for Christmas dinner!

But it is also lovely to read about what you're up to on the other side of the world, because when everything is closing off for us, it's all beginning for you, and we can enjoy your spring flowers in autumn, even if we can't smell them!

But please post some photos of the autumn leaves - your part of the world is so beautiful this time of year!
