Chocolate redux

Friday, 8 August 2008

It has been a week now, and I'm still chocolate-free.

It feels good. Spring is the time of year to clean out not just our homes, but our bodies as well. And mine is overdue for a clean out.

I'm surprised that I'm not missing it more. I thought I would be sneaking chockie into bed with me by now. But I'm not.

I'll see how I am faring by the end of the month (August) and if all is well, I will consider my next move. Probably an elimination of all junk food for a year.

Eep!

19 August 2008: Still chocolate-free, and not feeling the desperate need for the stuff that I thought I would feel. Odd. I thought by this point in time (two weeks on) I'd be finding black market chocolate dealers and doing deals in shady alleyways with guys in trench coats.

Hmmm...

Well, if all is still going well by the end of the month, I'll be dumping myself on the biggest dietary challenge of all (and no - it's not going veg!). Stay tuned...

Daharja - the new look is *great*-much cleaner and more appealing. I'm still choc free!!! FIVE DAYS. OMG. May be I really am capable of a year... I'd really like to do no sugar but that's a bit too hard. We are currently using: agave syrup or malt barley syrup or manuka honey from NZ as sweetener. These seem to be the healthy substitutes. I've read that Maple syrup is ok too.

Hi Anna,

Woohoo! Go you!

I'd like to go completely junk-free, but am considering choc-free as enough for the moment. Maybe junk-free will be next months' challenge? What do you think?

Yeah, I think I like the new look too. And easier to read, as it spreads the full width of the page.

Wish I had your will-power. The Olympic opening ceremony in Beijing had me reaching for the goodies!

Oh I so admire your willpower - or is that won't power! I am so torn between leaping in and joining your challenge or sneaking another bite of chocolate from the fridge . . .

Hi Pam,

I was out at rehearsal on Friday, so the Olympics didn't affect me. But my other passion is potato chips (Pringles Original, to be precise), and I don't know if I could give them up! I guess they'll be next! So I totally understand where you're coming from! Sporting events (and the openings of them) are deadly!

Hi Kiwimeg,

If you want to join in, you're welcome. You won't know if you can do it until you try. I figure if I fail, at least I gave it my best shot.

I figure I've got to die of something, so it might as well be chocolate. There are a lot of things I will give up for health and the environment, but chocolate and coffee are not on the list.

Best wishes to you on your quest.

What do you think of cacoa nibs - dark raw chocolate - seems they're full of antioxidants and really good for you... But I know this is still chocolate ... but it might be a worthwhile addition to the diet? We get them in packets here in UK made by Booja Booja I think.

Hi Alan,

Hmmmmm..dying of chocolate - now there's a thought! ;-)

I don't know whether this year long thing will end in my choice to banish chockie completely from my life forever, or in a full-blown ChocFest binge like a friend of mine did. She went choc-free for a year, long before anyone else thought of doing so, and her chocolate party that she threw at the end of her 'Lent' is still remembered nearly 15 years on.

*sigh*

Hi Anna,

I think cacao nibs are probably really good for you. But they do pose a couple of problems.

They still have the 'carbon miles' problem of being grown half a world away for the most of us who live in temperate climates. I don't have the money for a massive greenhouse, though I really wish I did!

Also, they're still chocolate, and they may foster a desire in me (at least) for other forms of the stuff. In all cases of quitting anything that I know of, cold turkey works best. By defining this chocolate-free thing as 'all forms of chocolate/chocolate flavour/chocolate ingredients etc.', it makes following the chocolate-free thing a whole lot easier.

Saying that, it is completely up to you. Your rules, your decision.

For my own rules for me, I'm trying to keep away from anything even vaguely chocolate-related, including cocoa drinks, and fake chocolate flavours, as well as (augh!) chocolate cake :-(
